The National Gallery is collaborating with Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication on 'Transcriptions: Sound'. This is an innovative new project which involves third-year students on the BA (Hons) Broadcasting (Sound Design) course producing a three-minute response to a painting of their choice in the Gallery's collection.

The creator on why this painting inspired him:

"From a sound designer’s point of view this haunting image provides wide scope for creative work.

I think it has a bleak, ominous atmosphere, and I tried to capture this with a combination of deep synthesised drones, recordings of wind and the movement of trees, along with the occasional distant sound of a child.

But I am drawn to the woman in the foreground. I find that no matter where I look in the painting, she catches my eye. The piano music represents this solitary figure."
