The National Gallery is collaborating with Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication on 'Transcriptions: Sound'. This is an innovative new project which involves third-year students on the BA (Hons) Broadcasting (Sound Design) course producing a three-minute response to a painting of their choice in the Gallery's collection.

The creator on why this painting inspired him:

"The dark, brooding colours of this painting interested me. The clouds are black and intrusive, while the single boat floating in the sea feels abandoned.

I wanted to convey the turbulent sea and weather but also capture a sense of loneliness. In researching the artist, I discovered that he suffered from bronchitis. To add to the unsettling mood, I decided to introduce this into my piece with coughing. I also magnified the wind."
