From the Film Maker...
I liked the strong themes which the painting inspired; the idea that whatever human beings do to avoid their fate, and however scared they are of being mortal and their body letting them down, that death was an inevitable conclusion. Whatever glorious things mankind does or creates with art and music, they will all die in the end. Not one in ten thousand escapes it!
I tried to use warm colours and emphasise blue against red and pinks to make the main character 'clash' with her surroundings, focusing on the person as opposed to the location she is in. I also wanted to give the impression of still lifes within everyday experiences. I used static shots as much as possible. One shot is made with just a voiceover and the character against a blank wall.
My main themes are mortality and its acceptance, as well as allegory. I find it a very effective way of illustrating issues and problems in society. The subject matter that I concentrated on in the painting was the skull and the musical and artistic instruments. I loved the beam of light landing on the artefacts but I only used it on the last shot of the film.
