The Two Friends

by Corin Taylor

From the Film Maker...

After reading about the painting, I found that these two women were prostitutes. I was really taken with this. I started to wonder what they were consoling each other about. This led me to concentrate on the theme of prostitution and friendship in adverse conditions.

The comforting pose of the two figures was the main reason I chose the painting. Lautrec painted a sympathetic portrait of these two prostitutes, and I wanted to do the same; to show the moments when they are not doing their job, to get an insight into what they do, finding out what they think about and how they must feel.

I wanted to end the film with the scene depicted in the painting. The frame composed is very similar to Lautrec's, using similar elements such as the characters' poses and the door at the back right-hand side.
