The Inheritance

by Lauren Slattery

From the Film Maker...

In the painting there appears to be a limited palette of muted colours. In my film I have followed a similar colour palette: greys, blacks and light blues. The single rose is painted in pink. In my film, I use a little girl to represent the rose and she enters wearing a pink jacket before entering a world of muted tones.

My film reflects the possibility of hope. To me, the painting represents hope, composed partly in darkness, partly in light. The final scene shows a shift in the two characters from despair to hope.

The first theme that came to mind when I saw this painting was innocence, but the longer I looked at it, the meaning deepened. In the end, the overall idea seemed to be peace and harmony among elements that don’t ordinarily go together.

This painting seems to say so much from something so simple. All the elements seem random, not necessarily fitting together, yet there is something harmonious about it.

While my two characters don’t necessarily fit together throughout the film, in the end they come to a sort of agreement. While you don’t walk away knowing that things will turn out alright for the two characters, you should be able to at least imagine hope for them.
