From the Film Maker...
In the painting the brown and primary light colours dominate. The primary light colours are used against an almost neutral background which permits objects to stand out in the composition. The main thing that attracted my attention was the characters sitting around the candle.
I like the candlelit atmosphere and I have tried to create a similar light quality and contrast within the film, especially during the nocturnal scenes.
I have played with the tools of perspective and light to create frames with sufficient dynamism to keep the attention of the audience focused on the narrative.
My interpretation of the painting was how, for many people, night and music have strong associations and this acted as a trigger for the film's narrative; where people get together to celebrate, to chat, enjoy themselves or just escape.
