From the Film Maker...

The strong message I felt behind the painting ‘Marcus Curtius’ is self-sacrifice.

In my film, Clarence, the main character, sacrifices himself to make a stand for the obstacles in his life represented by Terry, the obnoxious oaf in the cinema.

The painting presents the moment of tension before Marcus Curtius hurls himself into a bottomless chasm. In a similar way, the film builds to the climax where the lead, Clarence, is building up the courage to confront Terry.

I felt that the striking downward gesture of Marcus Curtius in the painting was quite powerful and incorporated it into my film. The gesture is that of justice being brought forth.

The painting also got me interested in the idea of how people today get rid of actual and mental demons by taking action and standing up for themselves.
