From the Film Maker...
The light of the snow inspired the whole lighting of the film, as well as the film itself.
I asked the painter Mary Vettise for a contemporary version of Avercamp's painting, and she did an abstract series of paintings in the same tones, which I also based my film around.
I found out that the painter was deaf and mute, which was very intriguing to me, in the sense that to some extent he painted cut off from the world. Within my film I tried to render an element of that feeling by staging a small world closed in upon itself. Elisabeth Butterfly
