From the Film Maker...
The first time I saw the painting, I was impressed by the dark blue of the sky. The way the variable light colours shine on the street is beautiful. It made me want to make a film with similar colours.
I like the composition in the painting - the way the artist used the straight road. It feels like it's never-ending. I also liked the high-angle view it has, and tried to recreate that in the composition of the film.
Part of the reason I chose this painting is that I really like Impressionism, where the image is a kind of 'blur'; the wet road after the rain and the use of the reflected light to create a 'moody' feeling are beautiful.
I know the painting was finished late in the painter's life; due to illness he mostly painted beside the hotel or from the windows. I feel that this situation is quite a lonely one; looking from the window seeing the outside world.
