From the Film Maker...
Seurat's Bathers at Asnières' has a joyful and lazy quality to it, a summer's day by the river. The boy in the bottom right corner seems to be calling for a new breath of life; as if he didn't belong there. His call could bring the other characters to life. After all this time, they might need a bit of fun.
In the film, I initially show the people from the painting in a colourless and constrained environment, shot in traditional composition. As they enter the carnival, they see new colours, the camera starts to move, and the editing accelerates. They let go and have fun. It all ends in samba.
