From the Film Maker...
I used the colour palette of the painting: pastel-like grey-blue and pink, lit by cool daylight. These colours guided me when planning the film: the lighting, props, costumes and location.
The idea of a reflection inspired me. In the film, the character James metaphorically places a mirror in front of Charlotte, reflecting to her the reality of her not being able to bear children. This is done first by confronting her in conversation and again in a physical confrontation in front of the mirror. Charlotte, in turn, does not know how to deal with it, and as she stares straight into this reality, she is paralysed.
In the painting, a woman is looking at herself naked, in the presence of a man. For me, this associates not with seduction but with a need for approval, a need to feel feminine. My character needs desperately to feel like a woman, but her sense of womanhood is crumbling.
