A Redder Shade Of White

by Annette Remler

From the Film Maker...

Every moment in my film is inspired by the mood this painting evokes. The odd position of the woman, standing with her back to the viewer, creates a sense of mystery around the character and makes us curious. What else is in the room that could tell us a little bit more about her? Not much.

It was this mood of emptiness which I used in developing my story. I broadened the palette, using more colourful walls, but I kept the spacious quality of Hammershøi’s ‘Interior’, using the framing from this painting and from the artist’s other studies of interiors.

Overall, I wanted to maintain the style of Hammershøi’s composition. I concentrated on the sense of emptiness, calmness and stillness that I felt when I looked at the painting.
