A Card Trick

by Alexander Wright

From the Film Maker...

The simple composition of this painting was the first thing that inspired me. My film represents an attempt to fill in the blank space in Murillo’s painting.

Murillo has painted a boy smiling but we don’t know why he smiles, or where he is.  When I first looked at the painting, I assumed that he was an innocent boy looking at something that makes him happy. Perhaps this is the smile Murillo wanted us to see. But if you look at the painting long enough, it becomes very hard to pin an emotion to the boy’s smiling face. A smile can mean anything.
