Bacchus and Ariadne

by Claudia Walde

From the Film Maker...

The painting 'Bacchus and Ariadne' is one in a cycle of paintings on mythological subjects presented at London's National Gallery. It hides many stories underneath one picture: betrayal, loneliness, struggle, power, protection, and love at first sight. Also, every character in it has their own story. Some of their backgrounds are connected, some just come together as their paths cross.

I was fascinated how two worlds connected the main characters at this very first moment of the love story beginning and, each had their own past universe behind them. A single moment not only unites them to a single future but also creates such a strong symbol for what the story really is about: How love saves and gives wings, and how it makes the world around them lush and vibrant - Just like Ariadne's crown that Bacchus throws in the skies where it turns into stars.
