The Raphael Saved
The National Gallery has secured the purchase of Raphael's 'Madonna of the Pinks' for the nation.
The Duke of Northumberland agreed to sell the painting to the National Gallery for £22 million. This is the amount payable after tax is deducted from the gross figure of £35 million.
The retention of the painting for the nation underscores the Gallery's role as a world-class institution in the collection, study and display of paintings. Above all, it complements and enriches the Gallery's unique group of eight paintings marking different moments in Raphael's early career and benefits from the context they provide.
The Gallery is indebted to the public for their support and the many thousands of donations, large and small, which have enabled the Gallery to purchase this wonderful painting.
