National Inventory of Continental European Paintings

This inventory records nearly 8,000 pre-1900, continental European oil paintings in over 200 UK public collections.

The inventory is the result of collaboration between the National Gallery, London; the University of Glasgow; and Birkbeck, University of London. Their work has been supported by museums all over the UK.

The inventory is available online, allowing you to discover a wide range of information about European art in UK public collections. You can find out about holdings of particular artists and schools, and search for particular works.

Access the online database (which is hosted on the Visual Arts Data Service website)

This website also includes:

• Further information about how to use the database

• Further information about the project that supported the creation of the inventory

• A full list of all the museums involved

National Inventory Research Project

The creation of the Inventory was supported by The National Inventory Research project, an ongoing project which aims to research and document pre-1900 European paintings in all UK public collections.

The National Inventory of Continental European Paintings is the first phase of this project, which aims to bring together information on over 22,000 works of art.

The project is celebrated in the National Gallery’s exhibition ‘Discoveries’. This exhibition brings together a selection of paintings with some of the stories the project uncovered about them.
