Painting of the Month

Dirk Bouts, 'The Entombment', probably 1450s

Christ's painfully thin, wounded body is gently lowered into a tomb that has been donated by one of his supporters. Jesus' followers mourn his death: each face is a study in intense, but restrained, emotion. This is a rare example of a painting on linen, a very fragile support.
