Painting of the Month

Manet, 'Music in the Tuileries Gardens', 1862

A fashionable Parisian crowd has gathered to hear the band, to see and be seen - modern city life crowds onto the canvas. The painting appears sketchy in parts, perhaps hastily executed; it was however the result of careful planning. Manet has included portraits of himself, his friends and family, sometimes in poses consciously adopted from older paintings he admired.

Special Feature: Posing in the Park
