Painting of the Month

Constable, 'The Hay Wain', 1821

Many of us are familiar with this picture, which probably appears on more place mats and tea towels than any other famous painting. But the original canvas can be quite a surprise: it's on a grand scale, and covered with short dashes of paint that give its surface an energetic, rather edgy feel.

Find out how Constable constructed his quintessential English landscape, and why it was seen as revolutionary when it was first made.
