Painting of the Month

Moroni, 'A Knight with his Jousting Helmet ("Il Cavaliere dal Piede Ferito"), perhaps Conte Faustino Avogadro', probably about 1555.

This knight is one of the stars of the new Central Hall display of 16th-century Italian art. Who is he, and why does he stand tall but also seem to be quite frail? Why do the walls behind him crumble, and what's the significance of the dismantled armour at his feet? Find out at one of our talks in October and in our special web feature.
