'The Ambassadors': Crucifix
The small, silver crucifix, half-hidden behind the curtain, is difficult to see - how long did it take you to spot it? It is the Christian symbol of salvation and life after death. Here, this tiny, clear glimmer of hope contrasts with the distorted skull, which cannot be missed in the centre front of the painting. The skull represents death and the end of life in this world.
Holbein may have adapted ideas from other compositions for 'The Ambassadors'. In the early sixteenth century, paintings of Saint Jerome in his study were popular. They often included a skull and a crucifix, as well as books and other objects.
