Loredan was Head of State (Doge) of the powerful Venetian Republic during 1501-21. It was a turbulent period during which Venice was often at war.

The Doge's Palace was also the seat of government. Pietro Casola said, 'I have seen many other princely palaces... but this is the most beautiful in Italy'. See it in paintings of Venice

The Doge's official barge was heavily gilded, and required numerous oarsmen. Thomas Coryat called it 'the richest galle of all the world'. See the boat for yourself.

The pattern on the front of the Doge's cloak is upside down, however, the pattern down the back - the most visible section during ceremonials - would appear the right way up. Zoom in to have a look.
