Painting of the MonthGiovanni Bellini, 'The Doge Leonardo Loredan', 1501-4 The beginning of the year is often a time for reflection on the past, and planning for the future. In the portrait, Bellini has used light and shade to show this political leader as a man who can do both. The shaded half of his face looks older, suggesting wisdom and experience (indeed, he was about 65 years old). It is balanced by the other side of his face, where the Doge meets the bright light of the future with a confident, unflinching gaze.
