The Story of Bacchus and Ariadne: Stars

Detail of Titian, 'Bacchus and Ariadne'.

Ariadne fell in love with her rescuer. When they married, Bacchus asked Vulcan, the God of Fire, to make his wedding gift for Ariadne. It was a gold crown set with stars.

He took her to Mount Olympus, the home of the gods, where they had many children.

When Ariadne died, Bacchus placed her crown in the stars to honour her. It became the constellation 'Corona Borealis'.
