The Story of Bacchus and Ariadne: Revellers

Detail of Titian, 'Bacchus and Ariadne'.

His riotous entourage follow close behind. The female followers of Bacchus, called maenads, dance wildly and clash cymbals and tambourines.

They are chased by mischievous satyrs - half-man, half-goat woodland spirits.

Bacchus's tutor Silenus is so drunk he has fallen asleep sitting on his donkey.
