A ship in the background is sailing away from the Greek island of Naxos.
On it is Theseus who is returning to his father, the King of Athens. He had been to Knossos in Crete, intended as a human sacrifice for the Minotaur - a half-man, half-bull monster who lived in a labyrinth from which no one had ever escaped.
With the help of Ariadne, daughter of the King of Knossos, Theseus killed the Minotaur and escaped. He took Ariadne with him, promising to marry her.
On the way to Athens, Ariadne - tired and seasick - begged Theseus to stop at the island Naxos so she could rest. Theseus then abandoned her as she slept.
