Claude, 'Seaport with the Embarkation of Saint Ursula', 1641.

Having made a pilgrimage to Rome, Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgin companions are setting off for home.

The bows and arrows they carry are the only sign of the bloodshed that lies ahead of them - according to legend they were killed by Huns on their return journey.

Claude has focused instead on the majestic surroundings of the port from which he imagined they departed.
