Diana and Callisto
1556-59
TITIAN
Active about 1506 - 1576
The pregnancy of the attendant nymph Callisto is revealed to her mistress, the goddess Diana. She is promptly banished.
This painting is the companion piece to ‘Diana and Actaeon’. The varied poses and bold gestures complement the figures in this composition.
These paintings were part of a group of six works inspired by the Roman poet Ovid. These works were painted for Philip II of Spain.
Titian's 'Diana and Callisto' is part of the Bridgewater Loan, which has been on display at the National Galleries of Scotland since 1945. |
