Gerrit Willemsz. Heda was the son of the Haarlem still-life painter Willem Claesz. Heda. Gerrit trained with his father and, like him, painted elaborate table-top still lifes. Gerrit joined the civic guard in 1642, suggesting that he was at least 18 years old. He was buried in Haarlem's Grote Kerk in July 1649.
