Fortunately I was allowed to get onto the roof of Somerset House and I didn't want to look back to the source of the Thames, but to look east towards the sea, which was a practice I'd had with the Exe estuary paintings... of looking towards the English Channel, never back inland towards the source of the river Exe.

It immediately opened up the whole vista of the city of London, right round to Tower Bridge, and in an elliptical shape from Tower Bridge to Tate Modern, to the IPC skyscraper, to the IBM buildings, and then round to the National Theatre complexes and it was all laid out. So that was a definite place to work, and so I've been going there every morning to draw on a little gantry 300 feet above the Thames.
