'A Pool surrounded by Trees'   Jacob van Ruisdael   about 1665

  John Virtue

This painting of the wood - extraordinary painting by Ruisdael, made - it seems to me - by this cross of the white trees on the bottom right of the painting. The blasted trees, the fallen tree and the vertical tree - this white X, which jams or holds or rivets the whole of this landscape.

Played off in the mid-distance is the hunt - I think it's a rabbit hunt - of the dog chasing the hare across this swamped woodland. A beautiful, beautiful, totally comprehensive, totally homogenous image.

Jacob van Ruisdael, 'A Pool surrounded by Trees' - black and white version.
