All About Her Hair

For me, the hair was the bit that I honed in on most because I've always had a thing about hair. Now, as you can see, I've got very short hair. I had very short hair even as a little girl and I longed for long hair and I begged my mum to let me grow my hair, but way back in those days mums were fiercer, or maybe my mum was fiercer, but anyway, she wouldn't let me and I do actually think she had a point, because when I got to be a teenager and started to do my own thing more I tried to grow my hair and though it stays sort of reasonably under control when it's very short, when I grow it, it sort of sticks out in weird clumps and won't do what it's supposed to do, and I don't know if any of you have ever had short hair and then tried to grow it out. It gets to a stage when you cannot do anything with it and you get fed up with it and so I always had it chopped off. So I've never really had the lovely luxury of really long hair and I always longed for that, always thought how wonderful it would feel to have a sort of lovely long hair, sort of hanging on your back and if you had it in plaits to be able to toss it over your shoulders or whatever. I love, love hair.

Whenever people ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, though always I knew I wanted to write stories because I didn't come from a posh background at all and my mum and dad certainly thought it was a mad idea and I would never be able to make a living out of writing books, and so they said no, I had to do something to earn some money to support myself, I used to think that I would like to be a hairdresser. I could think of nothing nicer than sort of combing and styling people's hair all day long. Luckily for me I actually managed to make it as a writer.
