REPORT BY WILLIAM BROPHY
A country was torn yesterday as the cities of Florence and Siena began battle. After years of unrest and months of accusations the war has begun. A war set to break families, friends and country-men apart.
An eye-witness recalled,
“The sky was ironically blood red, with the sun shining with a glimmer of hope.”
With horns blowing, drums beating and men calling, the cavalries began their charge. The Florentines were smart taking out the enemy’s archers quickly and effectively.
The ground turned from the green of summer to the red of death. Another eye-witness account told of the brutal slaughtering and blood-curdling cries of dying men.
The Florentines took a decisive victory. Although outnumbered, the Sienese warriors fought hard and long, taking many Florentines with them. But few can match the Florentine might and Siena will need to look to their politicians to bring this war to an end. |
