Description

Black edged letter with envelope (19 Jan 1897) from Lord Rosebery, written from The Durdans, Epsom to Sir William Agnew. Rosebery states that he has seen Ouless's portrait (possibly that of John Morley commissioned by him) but, distracted by a "gigantic Highlander" sitting for a portrait, he has been unable to form an opinion. Rosebery expresses condolences for Sir William's recent bereavement (possibly the death of his daughter Florence in September 1890) and regret that he has not been aware of it sooner.

Named persons featured:
Primrose, Archibald Philip, 5th Earl of Rosebery 1847-1929
Agnew, Sir William, 1st Baronet 1825-1910
