Papers and correspondence between Hendy, Davies, Maclaren and Trustees relating to the Gallery's acquisition of 'The Adoration of the Shepherds' by Poussin in 1957 including bidding for the picture at auction at Sotheby's, giving evidence to the Reviewing Committee re their objection to the export of the picture, negotiations with Messrs. T. Rogers and Company and David M. Koetser acting on behalf of Mr. H.H. Cevat re purchasing the picture from him, and re securing contributions from H.M. Government and the National Art Collections Fund towards the purchase.
Also correspondence with Commander Jocelyn Beauchamp and Treasury Solicitor re a statement published in the Daily Mail that the Gallery had declined the picture when offered for sale at £300 [prior to sale at Sotheby's to Cevat]; examination report on the picture, Sep 1956; Gallery's press release re acquisition, 27 Feb 1958.
