Description

Correspondence with Percy Moore Turner re his gift of Gainsborough's study for 'Mrs Graham as a housemaid', 1943 and re acceptance of his gift of 'The Top Hat' and agreement that it should be ascribed to Bonington, 1945.

The file also includes correspondence on other matters including: a letter from P.M. Turner to Clark, 2 Jan 1943 re a Francois Clouet portrait in his possession; a letter from Clark to P.M. Turner, 17 Feb 1943 declining a French portrait; correspondence with Messrs Boodle, Hatfield & Co, 1954, re separation of the Tate and NG and requesting their agreement that the Gainsborough and the 'Man in a Top Hat' ascribed to Bonington could be assigned to Tate; cutting from the Times, 3 Jan 1958, a press statement by Hendy, 8 Jan 1958 and correspondence with Benedict Nicholson, 1972 re non purchase of P.M. Turner's 'Christ in the Carpenter's Shop' by de la Tour in 1938
