Freedom of Information (FOI) Act: Gallery statement

The National Gallery welcomes the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act and has been preparing for its implementation for four years. The Gallery has appointed an Information Champion and a group of specialist staff to ensure that it is ready to meet all of the Act's requirements from 1 January 2005.

The Gallery has carried out a full survey of all its records and therefore knows what information it has and how to find it.

All staff have been advised of the Act's requirements through a dedicated newsletter and an e-mail from the director, and a special FOI guidance and reference folder has been set up on the staff shared network. Senior Gallery staff have attended an FOI training session and staff working in departments that will be closely involved in implementing the Act have received additional specialist training.

The Gallery has strengthened its Libraries and Archive Department with the appointment of a Records Manager and received guidance from external specialists.

The Gallery is committed to openness and transparency and to releasing information whenever possible. It already has an excellent system in place for handling public enquiries.
