20 April - 4 July 2004
National Gallery, Room 1
Generously supported by Mr and Mrs Christoph Henkel and The Dorset Foundation
'Take One Picture' is a countrywide scheme where primary school teachers attend a one-day course at the National Gallery and then embark upon a variety of classroom projects based around a painting from the Gallery's collection. The aim of the scheme is to emphasise the importance of visual art within the primary curriculum. It explores different ways of using paintings in subject areas such as literacy, numeracy, history, as well as art. The range of works inspired by the scheme since its inception nine years ago -encompasses writing, performance, film-making, sculpture, painting, printmaking and collage. Each year, the Gallery exhibits a selection of these works.
This year's 'Take One Picture' exhibition, inspired by Canaletto's painting of 'The Stonemason's Yard' (1727-28), will be on display in Room 1 at the National Gallery from 20 April to 4 July 2004. 116 primary schools undertook major 'Take One Picture' projects using the Venetian artist's work as the stimulus for the production of animations, song writing, visits to local stonemasons' yards, creative writing and many other exciting lessons and projects across a range of core subjects. Many schools treated the challenge as a whole school project, enabling teachers and students to work in new and creative ways. Other schools involved parents and their local communities by staging 'Stonemason's Yard' exhibitions. Four schools from Swansea worked together for the first time on a joint project, sharing their expertise and enthusiasm and facilitating better community relationships.
The exhibition will comprise the work from eleven selected schools: Walter Infant and Nursery School, Wokingham, Berkshire; William Barnes Primary School, Sturminster Newton, Dorset; Muswell Hill Primary School, London; East Park Infant School, Wolverhampton; Graiseley Primary School, Wolverhampton; The Straits Primary school, Dudley; St. John's C E Primary school, Nottingham; Brynhyfryd Junior School, Swansea; Clydach Junior School, Swansea; Craigcefnparc Primary School, Swansea; Tregwyr Junior School, Swansea.
The exhibition can also be seen online at www.takeonepicture.org.uk.
