The National Gallery's groundbreaking Print on Demand service, that enables people to buy a print of any painting from the Gallery's permanent collection, has won a prestigious award at a leading technology show. The National Gallery Company was presented with the award for 'Best Use of Technology in an Emerging Business' at the 2004 European Retail Solutions awards ceremony on Tuesday 8 June at the Birmingham NEC.
The judges awarded the prize to Print on Demand for its use of technology in creating 'positive benefits' and enabling future growth for the company through 'imagination and determination'.
The National Gallery was the first Gallery in the world to digitally scan its entire collection direct from the work and not from transparencies, providing visitors with the opportunity to own a reproduction of over 2300 works from the world's greatest collection of European painting. These include many previously unavailable reproductions such as 'Girl at a Window', a grisaille work by Louis-Léopold Boilly, and Gerrit van Honthorst's Caravaggio-influenced 'Christ before the High Priest'.
This facility is based in the Sainsbury Wing gift shop where visitors can browse through the Gallery's collection via a touch screen database and watch their selected image being printed in around 7 minutes on the state of the art Hewlett Packard 5500ps DesignJet inkjet printer.
Since its launch in July 2003 some of the most popular paintings chosen by customers from the National Gallery's extensive collection include Leonardo's 'The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne', Stubbs's 'Whistlejacket' and Monet's 'The Water-Lily Pond' (please see list below for Print on Demands top 10 best sellers).
This award follows Print on Demand's recent success at the Museum and Heritage Awards for Excellence (May 2004) where the service was nominated in the New Products and Services Category.
Prices for Print on Demand start at £10 for an A4 print, £20 for A3 and £25 for A2. There are also special limited edition prints which are regularly updated, from £50.
