NOISY PAINTINGS CRASH, ROAR AND SPLASH ONTO THE WEB!

The menacing roar of a tiger, the metallic clash of swords, the syncopated sounds of a swing band... just a sample of the sounds you will find in the National Gallery's engaging new interactive experience for children. Noisy Paintings gives young website users the chance to bring paintings to life by creating their own imaginative sound compositions in response to an array of National Gallery paintings. Once these young composers are happy with their efforts they can share them by sending friends and family a noisy e-card.

Noisy Paintings encourages children to explore paintings in greater depth, and ask questions about the subjects in a fun and engaging way. Through a combination of short questions and simple facts, children are encouraged to think about the painting as they have fun composing wacky atmospheric soundtracks. Noisy Paintings was designed for the 5-11 age group but is fun for all ages. One young noisy painter, Ethan Hughes, aged 4 said 'Noisy pictures was really good and cool. The sounds were really wicked.'

This is the first in a series of well-designed, high quality interactives within the newly launched Art Action Zone, a section of the website dedicated entirely to young visitors and families. The Art Action Zone provides quick and easy access to all the gallery's activities, resources and products for children, and offers a number of new and exciting ways for young people to engage with the National Gallery collection.

Art Action Zone complements already established in-Gallery activities for families and young people, which have developed a faithful following of around 20,000 children attending as family groups, and more than 80,000 school children. Young users will be invited to help shape the future of the site, to ensure that the features reflect what interests them most. Noisy Paintings was built using Macromedia Flash 6.

Noisy Paintings is the latest in a series of successful collaborations between the National Gallery and the award-winning NYKRIS Digital Design Ltd.
