ESTELLE MORRIS BACKS NATIONAL GALLERY'S 'LINE OF VISION'

On Wednesday 24 March at 3.15pm the Rt. Hon Estelle Morris MP, Minister for the Arts, will officially open the National Gallery's new exhibition space The Space@NG after contributing to a panel discussion at the National Gallery's 'Line of Vision' conference.

The idea for the Line of Vision conference developed out of the Gallery's Line of Vision programme, a creative workshop and mentoring scheme for children and young people in foster care. 35 young people aged between 7 and 20 took part in the scheme between May and December 2003.

Working under the aegis of contemporary artists, including Matthew Burrows, Ansel Krut, Felicity Powell and Dillwyn Smith, the young people made their own responses to the Gallery's collection. At each session they worked with different materials and towards different ends: painting, drawing, making collages, constructing and video-making.

This unique scheme is a collaboration between the Gallery, seven London social services departments, contemporary artist-mentors, and a state-registered art therapist. It is funded by the DfES.

The Line of Vision conference will examine the role of museums and galleries in working with children and young people in foster care and will consider issues around social exclusion, access and the role of museums and galleries in breaking down barriers to the arts.

Estelle Morris will join a discussion panel to address some of the wider issues that museums and galleries face when working with vulnerable and excluded communities.

At 3.15pm, after the discussion, Ms Morris will officially open the new gallery The Space@NG. This purpose-made exhibition and teaching area for education projects is situated in the Education Centre. The Space@NG opens with an exhibition of work produced by the young people involved in the Line of Vision scheme.

National Gallery Director, Charles Saumarez Smith, says: 'I am delighted that we are able to show some of the work produced in our innovative Line of Vision programme in The Space@NG. Line of Vision has been a great success and has developed links between the Gallery, social services and the Department for Education and Skills. The enthusiasm, creativity, and growing confidence of the participants is evident in the work on view.'
