Move it!
Indian Dancing

Every Friday and Sunday in August, 1.15 pm, Room 32

Move it! Come to the National Gallery this August to find out how Italian Renaissance paintings relate to Indian stories and dance. Through music and movement, the dancers will unravel the tales hidden in the pictures and convey their connection with epic stories of different cultures.

SAMPAD, a South Asian arts organisation, have developed two special performances based on story telling, Bharatanatyam and Kathak, forms of Indian classical dance.

6, 8, 13, 15 August
The performers respond to Gentileschi's Finding of Moses, telling the story of the birth of Lord Krishna from the Hindu Trilogy.

20, 22, 27, 29 August
The performers take Giordano's Perseus turning Phineas to Stone as their starting point, matching the terrifying severed head of Medusa with the story of Ravana the ten-headed demon, from the Ramayana.

Piali Ray, Director of SAMPAD says, 'Connecting Indian mythology and the paintings through stories and dance is a very exciting opportunity. It adds a further dimension to creating arts across cultures'.

These events are funded with grants from the Arts Council and the Bagri Foundation.

Notes to editors:
SAMPAD (which is interpreted to mean cultural wealth) was set up in 1990 to promote and develop the South Asian arts including dance, music, theatre, crafts and literature.
These events are part of the summer programme for adults, families and children taking place throughout August. The theme this year is 'Move it!' and there are activities taking place that are suitable for all ages.
