www.takeonepicture.org.uk is an ambitious new web resource aimed at primary school teachers across the UK. Devised by the National Gallery's new media team, the construction of the site has been made possible by generous support from Alliance & Leicester. The creation of the site was a response to the success of the Gallery's 'Take One Picture' scheme, that invites primary school teachers to attend a one-day course at the Gallery, and then embark upon a range of classroom projects based around a painting from the Gallery's collection. A different painting is selected each year. The range of works this scheme has inspired - encompassing creative writing, performance, film-making, sculpture, painting, printmaking and collage - is testament to the wide relevance of the visual arts within the primary curriculum. The website seeks to expand the scheme's reach, to inspire teachers nationwide and make art accessible to the widest possible audience.
The 'Take One Picture' website will highlight creative ways of working in the primary classroom, giving examples of good practice across key stages 1 and 2. It will provide useful resources for teachers on how art can be used as a stimulus to support National Curriculum and QCA objectives in subjects as diverse as literacy, science, ICT and history, as well as art, music, and design and technology. Examples of work from this year's exhibition will be shown on the website. These have been chosen specifically for the imaginative and creative ways in which the schools involved approached the National Gallery's painting, 'Saint George and the Dragon' by Paolo Uccello. The website will also provide information about future training days at the National Gallery and how teachers can apply to take part in 'Take One Picture'. Examples of work from previous years and past teachers' notes are also available on the site.
www.takeonepicture.org.uk will prove a valuable resource to teachers. It will be easy to use, fully accessible and will expand over time to include a bulletin board for teachers as a forum for the exchange of ideas, and to provide feedback to the National Gallery. The main aim of the 'Take One Picture' website is to inspire teachers, and to help make teaching creative and enjoyable.
