'The Three Kings at the National Gallery'
Christmas Events for Adults and Children

Who exactly are the Three Kings? The Bible speaks of wise men rather than monarchs, and historians say they were probably magicians or astronomers; they have stood for the Three Ages of Man and for the different human temperaments and thus have acquired a universal character, standing for all humanity. In Gossaert's magnificent 'Adoration of the Kings', dating from the early 1500s, the kneeling king, Caspar, represents Europe, Balthazar, the black king, Africa, and the bearded King Melchior, Asia.

In the run up to Christmas this year, the National Gallery focuses on the story of the Three Kings, exploring their representation in art through the ages. Numerous artists have been inspired to create splendid representations of the Magi, or wise men, who came from the East following a mysterious wandering star and knelt at the crib in Bethlehem, bearing precious gifts for the infant Christ.

The National Gallery collection features more than twenty interpretations of the story and during December, the Gallery's events programme will examine how the imagery of the Kings has changed over time to reflect new meanings and new perspectives.
