'Aelbert Cuyp '

13 February - 12 May 2002

£7 (£5 concessions)
Sainsbury Wing

Sponsored by Océ

Aelbert Cuyp (1620-1691) was one of the most important Dutch painters of the 17th century. His career spanned the period between 1640 and 1665, the Golden Age of the Dutch Republic and the greatest period of Dutch painting. Cuyp has often been described as a visual poet and his unique combination of Italianate atmospheric effects and his native Dutch landscape distinguishes his art from that of his contemporaries. His peaceful dreams of rural contentment have always greatly appealed to British collectors, and his reputation was made in this country in the 18th century. This is the first international loan exhibition devoted to his work.

Cuyp was born and spent his entire career in Dordrecht, a prosperous city with great economic power, a strong maritime fleet, and the distinction of being the oldest city in Holland. The exhibition will provide an overview of Cuyp's career spanning his early monochromatic views to his later grand, pastoral scenes of the Dutch landscape bathed in warm sunlight and populated by horsemen, travellers, shepherds and cattle such as 'River Landscape with Two Horsemen' (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam). The range of Cuyp's art is highlighted by the inclusion of his evocative views of the harbour and busy rivers in and around Dordrecht, for example 'The Maas at Dordrecht' (National Gallery, Washington), as well as portraits, biblical, and mythological scenes such as 'Orpheus Charming the Animals' from a private collection.

The exhibition has been organised by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, in association with the National Gallery, London, and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. In London the exhibition will bring together a selection of 43 paintings and 27 drawings. Works have been borrowed from collections in the United States, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. All his greatest paintings will be present.

The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue. Edited by Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., Curator of northern baroque paintings at the National Gallery of Art, Washington. The publication contains several essays by internationally renowned scholars as well as individual entries on every work in the exhibition. It is available from the Gallery shops for £25 paperback. The catalogue is also available in hardback, published by Thames & Hudson at £45.

The exhibition is sponsored by Océ, a Dutch multinational and global leader in digital document management and delivery technology.
