Purchase by the National Gallery of Paintings Belonging to John Julius Angerstein

The Angerstein paintings were the first paintings to enter the National Gallery collection. They were acquired in April 1824 when the House of Commons voted £57,000 for the purchase of the thirty-eight pictures which had belonged to the banker John Julius Angerstein (1735 - 1823). The purchase heralded the foundation of the National Gallery. Initially, the pictures were displayed at Angerstein's house in Pall Mall.

Some of the paintings have now been transferred to the Tate Gallery, and are annotated in this list.
