The Sainsbury Wing: Artificial Light

The artificial lighting system in the main galleries is intended to complement and supplement daylight, and to provide light for security and emergency purposes.

There are two sets of lights on separately switched circuits. During winter months the first set is usually switched on throughout opening hours to give an even wash of light across the region of the wall where the paintings are hung. In summer the galleries are lit by natural alone as much as possible. The second set of lights is only switched on when the combined illumination provided by the mix of daylight and artificial light is insufficient for comfortable viewing. This circuit is activated by internal light sensors.
