Care for the collection

The Gallery is governed by a Board of Trustees. Trustees are appointed by the Prime Minister and normally serve a five-year term of office. The Trustees are an independent body who bring an invaluable depth and diversity of expertise to the governance of the Gallery.

There are between 450 and 500 members of staff in the National Gallery, over half of whom are Security and Warding staff. The organisation is split into 19 departments, which cover all areas of activity including the care, study, presentation and promotion of the collection, visitor services, educational activities and administration.

The departments are represented by senior management on a management committee, which takes significant operational decisions for the Gallery. Staff are represented by one of three unions who meet regularly with senior management. The Gallery is committed to equal opportunities for all job applicants and employees.
