FAQs

Can I join a Friends scheme?

The National Gallery does not currently have a friends or members scheme. The Gallery does not have the space or necessary human or financial resources which are needed to run a nationwide programme.

We will be reviewing this, however, as we recognise the value of a friends scheme for the general public and the Gallery. If you are interested in becoming a friend in the future please email development@ng-london.org.uk. We will keep your details on file and will be in contact with you when we do start a programme.

In the meantime, there are many ways to be part of the National Gallery. We run free tours of the collection, lunchtime lectures and also an extensive programme of paid events too.

Please visit our what’s on section and sign up to our free e-newsletter. Alternatively, visit the Gallery and our information staff will be delighted to assist you.

Can I leave a painting to the Gallery and how would I do this?

Thank you, and yes, individuals do give paintings to the Gallery. Nearly a quarter of the collection has been given by generous individuals either during their life time or through a bequest.

In order to best manage these offers, and to ensure that the collection grows in accordance with the direction of our Director and Board of Trustees, we do request that you provide us with any information that you have on your painting. If possible, in the first instance please send a photograph to:

If you would like to talk to someone about this, please call our Development Office on 020 7747 5875.

How can I hold an event at the Gallery?

The National Gallery holds a range of dinners, private viewings and cocktail parties for our corporate members and sponsors. These events are elegant and a beautiful way to experience the Gallery.

To find out more please call the Events Team on 020 7747 2860 or email corporatemembers@ng-london.org.uk

How is the National Gallery financed?

We receive a grant in aid of £21.6 million from the British Government each year which provides two thirds of the extensive operational costs of running the Gallery. We depend on the support of individuals including visitors, corporate sponsors and trusts and foundations as well as income from our shops and cafes to meet our additional financial needs.

We do ask all visitors to contribute by making a donation as we do depend on the support of our visitors to help us pay for the extensive costs of running a world-class gallery. Every pound really does make a difference.
