Read the National Gallery's financial statements, from 2008 to the present day

Financial statements to 31 March 2014

The National Gallery continued to benefit from the generous support of private individuals, corporate members and sponsors, and trusts and foundations. This enabled the Gallery to continue its programme of exhibitions, outreach activities, building restoration work and acquisitions, with two paintings being added to the collection over the year, most notably George Bellows' 'Men of the Docks'.

The number of visitors to the Gallery this year saw a significant increase to 5.9 million (2012/13: 5.4 million), driven by an increase of 0.4 million visitors from overseas.

The Gallery continues to face significant and sustained cuts to grant-in-aid over the coming years, which will make private income even more critical to the future well-being of the Gallery.  Membership, donations and support from the corporate sector, trusts and foundations, and private individuals are vitally important for the continued success of the Gallery’s programme of exhibitions, programmes and outreach work.
